Tuning is an essential and routine piano service. It is recommended that pianos be tuned twice a year. Your piano may need more or less depending on the instrument, the climate it's housed in, and your own preferences and budget. If a piano is tuned regularly, it can usually be fine-tuned in a single pass. Otherwise, it may require an extra pass or even an extra visit to restore it to an accurate and stable tuning. Tuning destabilizes over time and is also affected by seasonal humidity changes, so regular tuning is important to keep your piano sounding great.

Pianos are designed to sound and operate best at "standard pitch," where the A above middle C measures 440Hz. A fine tuning centers the piano around this benchmark, while restoring the harmony between the 88 notes and within unisons (two or three strings for a single note).

The piano is tuned by adjusting the tuning pins with a special lever. As a pin is turned, the tension of its attached string is increased or decreased. Each string endures about 160lb of tension, adding up to roughly 18 tons of tension throughout the piano. It takes proper tools, practiced skill, an attentive ear, and patience to coax the pins into position. Once a tuning is complete, you're sure to hear the difference in your music!
